Hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as excessive sweating, affects millions of Canadians. BOTOX Therapeutic™ is not a cure for hyperhidrosis, but can offer significant relief from this often embarrassing medical condition.
WHAT IT DOES
Through injections, BOTOX Therapeutic™ reduces, and often temporarily eliminates, excessive sweating in the armpits (axillary) caused by hyperhidrosis.
HOW IT WORKS
BOTOX Therapeutic™ works by temporarily blocking chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate sweat glands. When these glands no longer receive these chemical signals, excessive underarm sweating stops.
Many Canadian extended health plans offer coverage for a portion of this treatment.
WHAT TO EXPECT
HOW IT FEELS
A small volume of solution is injected into the underarm area using a very fine needle. While there is some discomfort, as with all injections, it is minimal and typically does not require any numbing prior to the procedure.
This procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes.
There is no downtime associated with this procedure. Most normal activities can be resumed immediately. There may be some tenderness and mild bruising over the few days following this procedure, but it is not significant.
While results vary, the effects of this treatment typically last 4-6 months. It is important to note that areas not treated will continue to produce sweat normally.
